North Cyprus Holidays

Well, Northern Cyprus offers as much to the active as it does those who just want to relax and watch the world go by. The island is packed with remarkable historical sites, such as St Hilarion Castle, the remains of the Roman city of Salamis, Bellapais Abbey, Buffavento Castle, Kantara Castle and many more - and that's before we talk about the fascinating towns of Nicosia, Famagusta and Kyrenia; with its castle and stunningly beautiful harbour. The island is also awash with natural beauty. The Karpas peninsula appears fixed in time, with some of the island's most spectacular (and deserted!) beaches and wild, untamed scenery.

But holidays in Northern Cyprus are anything but all about the past. There are seemingly unlimited opportunities for shopping - and for the adventurous; go-karting, mountain jeep safaris, stunning walking scenery, boat trips, horse riding, paragliding and every watersport imaginable. The warm, crystal-clear waters of the Mediterranean offer superb spots for diving and snorkeling and north Cyprus has a number of internationally-approved dive centres, where you can experience the delights of the undersea world with a 'try-dive'. For the more experienced diver, everything is on offer - from wrecks, caves and undersea cliffs to night excursions. For those who would prefer to stay above the surface, everything is on offer, from a relaxing pedalo to the exhilaration of water-skiing. For a more leisurely day out, there are boat trips along the coast, where you can top up your tan and enjoy a freshly-caught fish lunch.

For those keen on a little therapy, north Cyprus offers myriad opportunities. Gold and silver jewellery can be exceptional value, as they are generally sold purely on the basis of weight. The covered market in Nicosia is definitely worth a visit and your senses will be assailed by a heady mix of colours and perfumes. Crossing the border to the south of Cyprus is very simple for anyone holding an EC passport and most major retailers are represented there. As the south of Cyprus is now part of the EC, there are no 'duty-free' limits. Remember to keep your receipts!
